About the authors

Chen Siyuan, LLB (NUS); LLM (Harvard), has been researching and teaching in SMU since 2010, specialising in evidence and procedural law. He graduated from NUS in 2007 with First Class Honours and served as a Justices’ Law Clerk and Assistant Registrar before embarking on his LLM at Harvard on an SMU scholarship. He has published in leading peer- reviewed journals in his field such as the Civil Justice Quarterly, International Commentary on Evidence, and International Journal of Evidence & Proof. He has also written several texts in his area, which have been cited by the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Singapore International Commercial Court. He directs SMU’s Ian Taylor International Moots Programme; highlights include the 2025 Jessup world championship, three Vis East world championships, five International Criminal Court world championships, four Oxford Price world championships, and the 2024 Lachs Space world championship. He also acts as a consultant to firms and governments on matters relating to criminal and international law.

Lionel Leo, LLB (NUS); BCL (Oxford), is a Partner at WongPartnership LLP where he practises civil litigation and arbitration. He also actively participates in the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme, representing accused persons in the State Courts, the High Court, and the Court of Appeal; and has been appointed amicus curiae by the Supreme Court on several occasions. A recipient of the British Chevening Scholarship and the Crewe Graduate Scholarship, Lionel graduated with First Class Honours from NUS and with Distinction from Oxford, and was the top student in the Law of Evidence in NUS. Prior to joining practice, he was a Justices’ Law Clerk and Assistant Registrar of the Supreme Court, and was concurrently appointed as a Magistrate of the State Courts. He has published book chapters and articles on evidence and civil procedure, has taught part- time at NUS and SMU, and is the principal coach for SMU’s Willem C. Vis Commercial Arbitration moot teams.
